Mississippi Masala
A
friend who loved this movie introduced it to me and I though why not and
decided to give it a try. The title itself caught my attention. I wondered.
What does Mississippi and Masala have to do with each other? Mississippi is a
state in America and Masala is an Indian term for blend of spices. I was
interested in finding out what the connection was between the two. The movie is
an hour and fifty seven minutes long, which I felt like it dragged on for a
long time and I lost interest at some parts. Since it was released in 1991 it
is quite old and I felt that it was a little hard to relate with the characters
and the overall story since it took place a long time ago, that had to be my
only issue with the film. However, the cast was amazing! There were tons of
faces I have seen before which made me more inclined to watch it. A star
studded cast of: Denzel Washington, Sharmila Tagore, Roshan Seth, Sarita
Choudhry, and Anjan Srivastav. The film was directed by Mira Nair,
(Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake) a veteran in the film industry.

I’m
a sucker for western/Indian movies (and bollywood movies!). Heaven on Earth
(Deepa Mehta), Water (Deepa Mehta), Cooking with Stella (co-directed by Deepa
Mehta), Monsoon Wedding (Mira Nair), and The Namesake (Mira Nair) are a few of
my favourites. I like film that is realistic and that I can relate to. Don’t
get me wrong I love Hollywood films too, but I am more drawn to reality drama
films.
Mississippi
Masala is one of those reality drama films, however not has heavy as the others
mentioned above it has its share of drama no doubt. The story is about Meena
(Sarita Choudhry) and her relationship with Demetrius (Denzel Washington) in a
small town in Mississippi. Their friendship grows into a blooming romance but
when her family (and the entire Indian community) finds out, the two are left
at crossroads. I don’t want to spill too much about the film because I’d rather
everyone see if for themselves. If you do check it out let me know what you
think, I’d love to know.
