Sheepish Gazes.
She wiped the sweat off of her brow, as she hung the wet clothes from a clothes line on the roof of her parents 3-storey cement villa. This was not how she spent her weekends in Bangalore. Everything about Kolar seemed to annoy her; her parents, her sisters, the birds, mosquitoes, the people... EVERYTHING! She longed to return to her hometown, her old house, and her old life. She hadn't gotten used to anything even after moving there five months ago from big city, Bangalore where she had it all: the freedom, an amazing social life, and tons of memories...
Lost in her thoughts, she caught the eye of a young man playing football in the field not far from her home. He subtly stopped kicking the football around and stared back at her. With one look, she scrunched up her nose and stuck her tongue out at the boy. Shocked, he smiled and waved at her. Embarrassed at what she had done, she grabbed the laundry basket and quickly fled down the terrace stairs avoiding the boy's gaze.
She tip toed into the kitchen cautiously attempting to avoid her mothers presence. She stopped at the large iron-framed mirror in the hall and took a look at her complexion, her mother gasped from behind her, "What were you doing up there for so long? You've become as dark as a crow!". Typical desi-mother lingo. She thought sarcastically. A heat wave or a natural disaster could be going on; and if you aren't looking "Fair & Lovely" 24/7, 365 days of the year you had no future... She turned around, stared blankly at her mother, looked back at the mirror then rolled her eyes. "Whatever". She muttered as she walked away.
